Steve Kleiber leaving Portage United Way
Steve Kleiber has resigned as CEO and president of the United Way of Portage County, effective May 24, and longtime Chief Financial Officer Gail Pytel, who had intended to retire on June 30, has agreed to postpone her plans and will serve as interim CEO through August.
Kleiber said he is leaving to become the regional sales manager for B.J. Wholesale Clubs for all of Ohio. The company has six stores in Ohio. In a letter to board members, Kleiber said he would continue as a volunteer for United Way programs.
Kleiber has been with the agency since July 2003.
"Steve has led our United Way organization through some of the most challenging economic times," said Barbara Zoller, chairwoman of the United Way of Portage County Board of Trustees. "It is because of his leadership and dedication that we have been able to generate the donor support that allows us to fund the many health and human services programs that help our county's residents who are in need. We wish Steve much success in his new endeavors."
In announcing the leadership changes, the United Way said Kleiber "significantly increased the number of local employers who participate in the annual United Way Workplace Campaign. During his tenure, the total annual contribution from individual donors has grown to $1,073,000.
Before coming to Portage County, Kleiber worked for the United Way of Summit County as campaign director and was vice president for the annual campaign at the United Way of Central Stark County.
This is the second time Pytel has filled in as CEO. Pytel has been with the organization for more than 30 years and has played an instrumental role in the organization's strong financial performance.
"Gail has been a bedrock of the United Way of Portage County," Zoller said. "Her commitment to the organization and our community is extraordinary."
Zoller said the board is assessing the long-term needs of the organization and a search committee is active.
