FAQ’s
Did you know that United Way of Portage County funds 43 partner programs housed within 14 local social service agencies in the county?
It’s true. Those impressive figures represent a myriad of needs in our community…and numerous forms of assistance. Whether it’s feeding families affected by a job layoff or a health crisis, providing a safe, friendly environment for latch-key children, assisting those with mental health issues or providing safe haven for victims of domestic abuse, our ability to extend this support to Portage County’s social service agencies and programs stems from the generosity of area businesses and individuals…people just like you! Together, we are improving the lives of people in need throughout Portage County.
But how does it work?
United Way of Portage County is an independent entity; we are not connected to the national United Way organization (except for the standards that United Way WorldWide holds and paying dues annually for the right to use their name). That means that money raised in Portage County stays in Portage County. Decisions about funding are made by Portage County community members who have an intimate knowledge of the needs our residents face. Our expertise lies in our ability to create a network of caring—comprised of civic leaders, corporations, foundations and volunteers—who, together, make a significant and beneficial impact on people in need in our community.
By connecting all the players, United Way can better address the serious issues facing many of our neighbors, and develop a comprehensive plan for positive change. Uniting agencies and organizations allows for more effective planning and execution of services. Separate, scatter-shot efforts simply dilute the goal we all work towards: making our community a better place to live, work and raise families.
How does United Way’s local campaign committee set a goal for each year’s fundraising?
Annually, a volunteer committee, largely consisting of civic and corporate leaders, along with United Way of Portage County’s campaign staff, discuss community needs, the best way to impact those needs, and a financial goal for the campaign.
Obviously, there is never enough funding to support and assist all of the organizations in Portage County that benefit our citizens. The needs are great; the resources are limited. But, thanks to the teamwork and generosity of many, we continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our neighbors.
FUNDEC – United Way donations at work
United Way of Portage County’s Fund Executive Committee or FUNDEC, plays a vital role in ensuring that public donations are put to work efficiently and effectively by social service programs.
United Way volunteers gather in late April and early May to make important program funding decisions.
United Way funding decisions directly affect services provided by programs in the county like those provided by The American Red Cross, Big Brothers & Sisters and Family & Community Services.
United Way will distribute funds to 501(c)(3), not-for-profit health and human service agencies, organizations or community groups that have been in business for at least two years. The organization must provide services to the community in one of the following areas of impact:
Crises, Children & Youth, Adults, Families, Health
The FUNDEC process begins with community volunteers reviewing program applications and lending their time to listen to program representatives, asking tough questions about how allotted United Way dollars impact the children, adults, senior citizens, disabled and disadvantaged citizens they serve in the county. FUNDEC volunteers also hit the pavement and conduct on-site visits at each of the partner program locations in order to get a first-hand account of how community donations are being put to work.
In mid-May, United Way’s Board of Trustees will finalize FUNDEC volunteers’ allocation decisions and that is when the magic happens: The donations are channeled to help change the life of a child who needs a safe haven of care after-school, or to aid a family dealing with the stresses of a recent job downsizing or an unemployment situation.
Donations are utilized to serve those in need in the county.
