FUNDEC – United Way donations at work
United Way of
Portage County’s Fund Executive Committee or FUNDEC, plays a
vital role in ensuring that public donations are put to work
efficiently and effectively by social service programs.
After spreading
the word about how the organization’s 46 funded partner social
service programs help people in need in the county, and then
rounding up donation dollars during the fall campaign, United
Way volunteers gather in late April and early May to make
important program funding decisions.
United Way funding decisions
directly affect services provided by programs in the county like
those provided by The American Red Cross, Big Brothers & Sisters
and Family & Community Services, just to name a few.
United Way will distribute funds to
501 C 3, not-for-profit health and human service agencies,
organizations or community groups that have been in business for
at least two years. The organization must provide services to
the community in one of the following five United Way
Community Impact Areas in order to receive support:
Helping Children & Youth
Helping Adults
Helping Families
Responding to Crises
Maintaining Health and Well-Being
The FUNDEC process begins with
community volunteers reviewing program applications and lending
their time to listen to program representatives, asking tough
questions about how allotted United Way dollars impact the
children, adults, senior citizens, disabled and disadvantaged
citizens they serve in the county. FUNDEC volunteers also hit
the pavement and conduct on-site visits at each of the partner
program locations in order to get a first-hand account of how
community donations are being put to work.
In mid-May, United Way’s Board of
Trustees will finalize FUNDEC volunteers’ allocation decisions
and that is when the magic happens: The donations are channeled
to help change the life of a child who needs a safe haven of
care after-school, or to aid a family dealing with the stresses
of a recent job downsizing or an unemployment situation.
Donations are utilized to serve
those in need in the county.
