Did you know that
United Way of Portage County
funds 39 partner programs and 13 local social service agencies
in the county?
It’s true.
Those impressive figures represent a myriad of needs in our
community…and numerous forms of assistance. Whether it’s
feeding families affected by a job layoff or a health crisis,
providing a safe, friendly environment for latch-key children,
assisting those with mental health issues or providing safe
haven for victims of domestic abuse, our ability to extend this
support to Portage County’s social service agencies and programs
stems from the generosity of area businesses and
individuals…people just like you! Together, we are improving
the lives of people in need throughout Portage County.
But how does it
work?
United Way of
Portage County is an independent entity; we are not connected to
the national United Way organization (except for paying dues
annually for the right to use their name). That means that
money raised in Portage County stays in Portage County.
Decisions about funding are made by Portage County community
members who have an intimate knowledge of the needs our
residents face.
Our expertise
lies in our ability to create a network of caring—comprised of
civic leaders, corporations, foundations and volunteers—who,
together, make a significant and beneficial impact on people in
need in our community.
By connecting
all the players, United Way can better address the serious
issues facing many of our neighbors, and develop a comprehensive
plan for positive change. Uniting agencies and organizations
allows for more effective planning and execution of services.
Separate, scatter-shot efforts simply dilute the goal we all
work towards: making our community a better place to live, work
and raise families.
How does United
Way’s local campaign committee
set a goal for each year’s fundraising?
Annually, a
volunteer committee, largely consisting of civic and corporate
leaders, along with United Way of Portage County’s campaign
staff, discuss community needs, the best way to impact those
needs, and a financial goal for the campaign.
Obviously,
there is never enough funding to support and assist all of the
organizations in Portage County that benefit our citizens. The
needs are great; the resources are limited. But, thanks to the
teamwork and generosity of many, we continue to make a
meaningful difference in the lives of our neighbors.
What were the
results of United Way of Portage County’s 2005 campaign?
Our goal for
the 2005 campaign was $1,125,000.00. Our final total was
$1,070,000.00.
While we ended
the campaign somewhat short of goal, we are pleased to note
that, for the third straight year, the final figure represents
an increase in pledges and contributions—no small feat,
considering the ever-growing needs for assistance, plus the
dwindling resources available to meet them.
